About Me

So, I have noticed that I have a couple of new followers (welcome!). I have thus decided to make this little post introducing myself.

Hi! My name is Katie. I am a thirty-something living in northern Minnesota. I currently work in a call center (blech). I also like cats more than I like most people (see above).

I have been running this blog since 2013, but haven’t really been updating it seriously until this past January. The title, “Wrath Of The Bitch Queen,” is basically a play on the second World of Warcraft expansion, Wrath Of The Lich King. Because I am a fan of WoW, puns, and reclaiming the word “bitch.”

I am a huge nerd, and have been one for pretty much my entire life. I grew up watching numerous sci-fi series like Star Trek and Babylon 5, as well as a number of movies of the same genre. I also read a lot of sci-fi and fantasy novels, and have been very into video games since I was about 18. Those are the topics that I generally tend to blog about.

I currently have a PayPal site, and a Ko-Fi link, for people who want to make a coffee-sized donation.

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

So, welcome! I hope you enjoy. 🙂

Patreon’s Fee Changes And Where To Go From Here

(Update 12/13/17: Due to the backlash that this decision has received, Patreon has apparently decided not to roll out the changes detailed below. In the post linked above, they say that they will still be making some changes, but will be listening to input from creators and patrons this time. Personally, I plan on taking a wait-and-see approach before deciding if I want to use their service again.)

Just a bit of housekeeping here. A number of folks may have realized that Patreon, the website that I and many others use to fund our work, has decided to add a 2.9%+$.35 fee to all pledges in order to try and make this a bit more even, as before it was a 5% fee+whatever processing fees were. They are planning to achieve this by passing these fees onto customers.

This will have the greatest impact on those making $1 donations, which is the lifeblood of Patreon. This change actually makes those donations cost $1.38. And, again, this is not a flat fee across all pledges, but per pledge, which adds up. Because of this, I have had to cancel my own pledges to other creators.

And, because of this, I can no longer in good conscience continue to use this service.

I have, as of today, closed my Patreon page. I would like to thank the people who have supported me over the past couple years or so. I am so very, very grateful to every one of you. I may start it up again if Patreon decides to walk back this change that no one wanted or asked for, but that seems likely.

There aren’t really a lot of other services like Patreon; Kickstarter is currently planning a new service called Drip, but that is still in beta. In the meantime, however, I do currently have a PayPal and Ko-Fi page for people who want to support what I do here with one-time contributions.

So, that’s that. Thank you again for your support. I really do hope that Patreon considers walking back this disastrous change, but I very much doubt that they will.

Video Games

Katie Plays Stuff: Silent Hill, Part 1

So, I’ve decided I’m going to try something new. Instead of posting game reviews (at least for now), I’m going to focus my gaming posts more on writing posts about games that are already pretty well-established, or that I just like for some reason. These will be more like analyses than game reviews, and will go under the Katie Play Stuff tag (which I used to use for game reviews, but I think it fits stuff like this more).

I’ve decided to start with one of my absolute favorite horror games: Silent Hill. Naturally, there will be spoilers (as much as one can be said to spoil an almost 20 year old video game, anyway). Also, there are a number of uncomfortable themes, such as abuse and the loss of a child (not to mention a metric fuckton of blood and random corpses), so if that kind of thing bothers you, you might want to sit this one out.

disturbing
They aren’t kidding.

I’m going to split this up, otherwise the post will get ridiculously long, so I’m going to start with a summary of the game’s plot. As can be expected, there will be spoilers after this point (as much as one can spoil a popular, almost 20-year-old game), so I would recommend tracking and playing the game first if you can.

Recaps, Star Trek, Television

Star Trek: Discovery Recaps-“Context Is For Kings”

A bit of housekeeping first: I have obtained a new patron, Justin Grays! Thanks Justin! If you look at the right side of the page, you will see a link to his site under “blogroll.” Also, if you enjoy this blog, and would like to throw some money at me, consider donating to my Patreon.

That out of the way, besides my typical spoiler warning I would also like to warn you that this is probably the most gruesome episode of Star Trek I’ve ever seen in my entire life. If you’re a bit squeamish, you may want to sit parts of this one out (though I probably won’t show too much of it in the actual images, though there will be descriptions).
